About Lyn Bruce

Lyn Bruce is a contemporary colourist painter based in Lancashire, working primarily in oils. Her paintings are driven by colour, texture and an emotional connection to the subjects she paints, with a particular interest in people, relationships and the stories that exist beneath the surface of an image.

Lyn describes colour as the most important aspect of her work. She is drawn to bright, expressive palettes and often uses palette knife and thick paint to create textured, energetic surfaces.

Artist statement

I am a contemporary colourist painter working primarily in oils. My work is driven by a deep emotional connection to the subjects I paint and by an enduring fascination with the relationships between people.

Through gesture, expression and composition, I seek to tell the stories that exist beneath the surface of an image, inviting viewers to reflect on moments of connection, intimacy and shared experience.

Colour plays a central role in my practice. I am drawn to bright, expressive palettes that bring energy and emotion to my paintings. Through the interplay of colour and form, I aim to create works that are both visually engaging and emotionally resonant.

Painting is more than a creative pursuit for me. It is something I feel compelled to do. The process brings me immense joy and gives me a way to explore the world around me. Each painting is a way to celebrate the rich complexity of our relationships with one another.

Background and practice

Lyn is mainly self-taught and has been attending oil painting courses for the past five years. After exploring watercolour and acrylics, she found oil painting to be the medium that best suited her love of colour, texture and expressive mark-making.

She also sketches from life using charcoal and water-soluble pens, and enjoys observing and sketching people in cafés, where everyday moments often suggest stories, relationships and character.

Style and influences

Lyn’s work is contemporary, textured, colourful and expressive. She paints figurative subjects, interiors, landscapes and plein-air studies, often working from photographs she has taken, scenes from local beauty spots, or moments observed while travelling.

Her influences include Matisse, Willem de Kooning and Cézanne, alongside the high-key colour and energy associated with impressionist painting.

Exhibitions and recognition

Lyn has exhibited locally over recent years, including exhibitions at The Storey in Lancaster, The Harris in Preston, The Atkinson in Southport and other local venues.

She has also exhibited with Preston Art Society and received a commendation in 2024, Best Contemporary Painting in 2025 and the Wilkinson Cup in 2026. Lyn is a member of Preston Art Society and Hutton Art Society, where she is also involved as a committee member.
